Sometime in the middle of reading Alphonse Pierre’s 2Slimey roundtable with friends of the blog Mano Sundaresan, Kieran Press-Reynolds and Olivier Lafontant, I realized there are two distinct veins of the subgenre.
I see your point about how it's refreshing that a regular, kinda nerdy artist is up right now. I mean you don't need to convince me on that - I was a big defender of early Jane Remover at p4k 5 years ago (to her credit, she seems way cooler now). I want to know what Slayr stands for - what he's into, what he's about. It's a fun listen but it's not telling me those things every song.
it's funny you say that cause you are correct in your complaint but personally the record(s) are so fun i dont even care if he's kind of a blank slate in that way! a bit how enjoy jazz fusion or prog rock where it just rips even if they arent about shit, lol
maybe the newness and freshness of it will wear off in time, we shall see
